Building On the Past 

In the early 1960’s, ranching with my family and raising cattle was a way of life. More than six decades later, it’s not just a way of life, it’s a passion.

Back then, our goal was to raise calves in demand and sell pounds. As the years passed, for me, this goal became more focused on providing high-quality beef through research, sound practices, and selecting genetics that would improve my herd. Genetics and environment play vital roles in the quality of cattle you raise and beef you produce.
2 Bar C Cattle Company began in the mid-1980’s, when the opportunity to lease 1,000 acres in the Texas Hill Country west of Austin presented itself; I jumped in without looking back. After living and working away from the family farm for quite a few years, I wanted to regain that part of my past, build on it, and pass along a valuable heritage to the next generations. Nothing replaces the experiences, lessons, and values instilled through the hard work and dedication it takes to successfully raise livestock. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to pass these lessons and values along to future generations.

As opportunities presented themselves, my wife and I began purchasing land in Caldwell County just outside Luling, Texas, to put together 2 Bar C Ranch. We moved to the ranch from Austin in the early 2000’s. Over the years, as our children and grandchildren joined us, the operation grew.

The Shift

In 2002, we expanded the operation and added a registered herd of Black Angus. This shift launched us on a more focused path to achieve our goal of providing some of the highest quality beef available for consumers, and offering cattle with excellent genetics and consistency for registered and commercial producers. Black Angus produce high-quality beef with excellent marbling, which is a draw for breeders wanting generational improvements for their herds. Our herd began with 15 registered heifers. Year after year, we selectively purchase cattle and semen from some of the top Angus breeders around the country to increase the quality and consistency of our herd. Today more than 60% of our calves are born from embryo transfer.

The Proof

In 2016, we put half of our bulls in the GrowSafe® Performance Data program. By 2018, we enrolled 100% of our bulls into the program. Originally, the GrowSafe® Program provided data on each animal by measuring its daily intake of dry matter and weight gain. Water intake was added to the data collection system. This data allows producers the opportunity to select more efficient genetic performance to enhance their herds based on their geographic and temperate needs. Better feed efficiency in your program puts more dollars in your pocket.

We took the data one step further and developed RPD® (Real Progeny Data) and E and G Indexes through Greensteak, which provide producers a more detailed look at how the progeny in their herds should perform on the rail based on their parentage.

The Next Step

In January of 2019, we began site work on the 2 Bar C Sale Barn and Event Center and held our first Annual 2 Bar C Ranch Production Sale on December 7, 2019. If you miss our Annual Production Sale in December, we entertain private treaty requests for cattle, embryos, and semen throughout the year.

Our breeding program focuses on developing calving ease genetics with tremendous acceleration in weight gain during weaning while achieving top performance in the feedlot.
